Let’s talk about sustainable investing

Sustainable investing goes by many names: Socially responsible investing, ethical investing, and impact investing, among others. As Chief Strategist Ryan Detrick, Equity Strategist Jeffrey Buchbinder, and guest speaker Jason Hoody, Head of Investment Manager Research, discuss, the different names all fundamentally describe the same thing: Investments made with the intention of generating a positive environmental, social, and governance impact along with a financial return. 2020 was a very good year for sustainable investments, as software, growth, and clean energy all soared. As a result, flows have exploded higher, nearing $300 billion. The strategists agree that this trend could only be beginning and the future is quite bright for sustainable investing.

More great news on the economy

January retail sales came in up over 5% from December 2020 levels, more than 4% above what was expected. Much of this was due to the recent fiscal stimulus, but it is another sign of an economy that continues to recover quicker than even the most optimistic bull would expect. Fourth quarter earnings season is wrapping up as well, with more than 80% of S&P 500 Index companies beating expectations and earnings now up close to 4% year-over-year versus down double digits a few months ago.
