If you feel that your personal information has been put at risk, consider freezing your credit immediately. The process of freezing your credit doesn’t impact your existing accounts and will prevent criminals from opening new fraudulent accounts with your information.

Protecting your data while traveling

There are more opportunities than ever for users to access their accounts on multiple devices and from multiple locations. Staying aware of cyber dangers is essential when traveling.

Follow these tips to protect your information when you’re on the go:

  • Avoiding the use of public Wi-Fi or enabling a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to keep yourself protected
  • Avoiding public charging stations and using a personal charger for devices  
  • Encrypting sensitive data
  • Being selective with who, how, and when you share your PII
  • Using credit cards for purchases instead of personal checks or debit cards.

LPL has policies in place to ensure LPL Financial advisor machines are secure and data is protected. These include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Utilizing encryption when sending sensitive emails outside of your organization.
  • Confirming the identity of anyone with whom you’re speaking over the phone, including anyone claiming to be from tech support (to avoid voice phishing, or vishing, attacks and threats)
  • Keeping hardcopies of PII data securely locked (ex: file cabinets or offices) and maintaining a record of those with access
  • Ensuring  any sensitive electronic documents or information are retained on approved systems that comply with LPL guidelines and policies
